Proposed DOT Regulation for POCs Could Be Final by End of Year

Last month, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Secretary Mary E. Peters responded to a letter from key members of the COPD Congressional Caucus urging the DOT to issue final regulations governing the use of portable oxygen concentrators (POCs) on commercial airlines. Currently, the federal government gives airlines the option to permit approved POCs onboard. If enacted, the proposed regulations would require the airlines to do so.

Battle of the Sexes Exists for COPD, Study Says

A new study led by Dr. Fernando J. Martinez, of the University of Michigan, shows marked differences between men and women with COPD and severe emphysema.Women in the study had shorter smoking histories and lower body mass indexes than men; and experienced more breathlessness, lower lung function and decreased exercise capacity compared to men. Women also reported more depression, a lower quality of well-being and scored more poorly on a test for overall mental health.

CHAMP Act Threatens to Further Reduce Oxygen Cap Period

On July 26, the Ways and Means Committee debated oxygen, competitive bidding and power wheelchairs in a hearing on the children's health bill. The committee approved H.R. 3162, the Children's Health and Medicare Protection Act of 2007 (CHAMP) Act. The Ways and Means Committee package would reduce the cap period for oxygen from 36 to 18 months but would retain the 36-month rental period for portable oxygen equipment. Transfer of ownership of oxygen equipment to the beneficiary would be subject to these limits.
