Decision Memo on Home Sleep Testing Expected Today

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is expected to issue its decision memo regarding home sleep testing some time after 4 p.m. EST today . The decision comes ahead of the final rule in March 2008. A 90-day comment period will follow the decision memo.

Study Shows Increased Prevalence of COPD Among Women

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is on the rise in women in prevalence, morbidity and mortality. By 2000, the number of women dying from COPD surpassed the number of men. But the rising number of cases in women has not been matched by medical understanding of the disease’s apparent gender-bias.

COPD Supporters Rally for Pulmonary Rehab at Congressional Briefing

On Nov. 8, members of the House and Senate participated in a Congressional briefing, hosted by the COPD Congressional Caucus in a strong showing of support for two pulmonary rehabilitation bills — S. 329 and H.R. 552. The bills, if passed, would add a pulmonary rehab benefit to Medicare.
Invacare Drops Out of Medtrade

Yesterday, Invacare announced revised trade show plans for 2008 that excluded participation in the two Medtrade shows. A formal statement from the company said it would shift resources "from a key focus on one or two trade shows to a broader focus on specialized trade shows and more customer-oriented training activities."

New Bill Would Improve Services to Lung Patients

Two Long-Acting Inhaled Bronchodilators Better Than One, According to New Study

At the American College of CHEST Physicians annual meeting, a new study presented by Dr. Donald Tashkin, with the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, revealed that COPD patients treated with Foradil Aerolizer (formoterol fumarate inhalation powder), a long-acting inhaled bronchodilator, and tiotropium experienced statistically significant greater improvement in lung function than patients treated with tiotropium alone.
