Medquip has joined 1% for the Planet, a non-profit organization that leverages resources to create a healthier planet. On Oct. 1, Medquip will begin donating 1 percent of its annual sales to the group.
Craig Bright, president, says the company will direct funds to environmental causes that directly impact pandas and penguins, animals currently reflected in the designs of two of their most popular nebulizers.
The idea is to "help us save our penguins and pandas because the pandas are definitely endangered species on the list, and the penguins, because of global warming, there's some real concern there," Bright says.
The company plans to donate money toward global warming research and natural habitat preservation.
An ad featuring a letter from Bright urging others to be more environmentally responsible rolls out for Medtrade. The company will feature posters of the ad at the booth as well as information and handouts about 1% for the Planet.
"The whole ad is going to be focused on 'Hey, we want generations in the future to see these animals in their natural habitats not just in likeness like our items are,' " he says.
Bright also says the letter will thank Medquip customers whose continued patronage allows the company to donate.
When considering his decision, Bright said he was surprised by the lack of involvement in environmental issues among manufacturers in the medical field. He sees being involved in the organization as a way to do something about environmental factors that contribute to conditions like asthma, which is exacerbated by allergens.
"It's also going to be something long-term that's going to create fewer people that are getting sick," he says.
Bright hopes that his contributions will help reduce the rising costs of health care that he says are causing continued reimbursement cuts.
Besides that, he thinks that giving back is the responsible thing to do.
"There are things in the world outside of business that are just as important," Bright says.
